Budget “Supercommittee” Deadline Is Here: Farm Bill Conservation and Energy Programs at Stake

October 14 is the deadline for Congressional committees to send their deficit-reduction recommendations to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, which is charged with reducing the federal deficit by $1.2 trillion or more over the next ten years. Nutrient Pollution a Persistent Threat to Nation’s Water Quality

A number of recent studies have assessed the status and trends of nutrient pollution in the nation’s groundwater, streams, lakes, and estuaries and reviewed the effectiveness of government efforts to protect and restore these vital water resources. Much more needs to be done. Agriculture is a major contributor the nation’s polluted groundwater and waterways, and corn production (the source of most of today’s biofuels) uses more nitrogen than any other crop. Getting more producers to use best management practices to use less fertilizer more effectively would help.

Biomass Thermal Summit November 16

On November 16, in Washington, DC, a coalition of rural, renewable energy, and natural resource interests from across the U.S. will gather for an education and outreach event, the Biomass Thermal DC Summit. Summit participants will engage policy makers and renewable energy‐related groups on the substantial benefits of biomass thermal energy use: increased rural economic activity, energy independence, healthier forests, and effective tax policy.
