Funding for Farm Conservation and Energy Programs Cut in FY12 Appropriations

On November 14, the House/Senate conference committee released its report on the agriculture appropriations bill for fiscal year 2012. The committee needed to reconcile differences between funding levels in the House and Senate versions of the bill. The resulting agreement would make further deep cuts in investments in Farm Bill energy and conservation programs.

Biomass Heating: Big Potential Needs a Boost

While much of the nation will benefit from low natural gas prices this winter heating season, it will be a different story for the millions of households and businesses across the country that are not on the gas grid. The cost of heating with fuel oil is expected to reach record levels this winter. Propane prices are up sharply, too. And, heating with electricity is the least efficient and most expensive alternative of all. During these hard economic times, high heating bills will only make things worse for many – especially across rural America.

In 2010, the United States generated about 250 million tons of municipal solid waste. Approximately 34 percent of that was recycled or composted. Most of the rest was dumped in landfills. Can the nation do better?
