Federal Report Highlights Risks to U.S. Agricultural Sector, Rural Communities from Climate Change
Climate change is something that’s often seen “as an issue that’s distant, affecting just polar bears or something that matters to our kids,” according to Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist, professor at Texas Tech University, and an author of the recently released National Climate Assessment. However, the report, released May 6, makes it increasingly clear that the effects of climate change are here and now –not only as sea level rise or urban heat waves, but in ways that will increasingly affect agricultural producers and rural areas as well.
Fuel Security Essential to Mission Security: Congress and DOD Moving Forward on Fuel Alternatives
Even if the battle over the consumer gasoline tank continues – the U.S. military is moving forward with biofuels. Mission security and national security depend on energy security. Refueling activities put troops in harm’s way, and the need for petroleum-based fuel increases our national security risk. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) recognizes that dependence on petroleum is unsustainable.
