Researchers Find RFS and Other Mechanisms Play Critical Role in Reducing Transportation Emissions
On January 11, new journal Nature Energy published a study in its inaugural edition, ‘Impacts of a 32-billion-gallon bioenergy landscape on land and fossil use in the US.’ In the study, researchers used economic and ecological modeling to calculate how land use change and gasoline replacement from renewable fuels impact greenhouse gas emissions under three scenarios; no policy, the Renewable Fuel Standard as-is, and the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) plus a cellulosic biofuel tax credit.

Your Clean Power Plan – Comments on Biomass and the Federal Implementation Plan Due Jan 21
On January 21, the U.S. EPA will close the comment period on the Clean Power Plan's Federal Implementation Plan (FIP) and model trading rules, which the EPA released in draft form in August 2015 when it finalized the Clean Power Plan. The FIP will be required by states that either do not submit state plans, or submit insufficient plans. The model trading rules are to provide a guideline for states, as many states are expected to prepare trading ready plans, so that they may trade emission rate credits or allowances with other states. EPA is also asking for comment on whether biomass should be included in the FIP.

The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) invites you to a briefing discussing how environmental justice (EJ) is addressed through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Clean Power Plan, the nation’s first-ever rules limiting carbon pollution from power plants (which are the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States). The Clean Power Plan will not only cut millions of tons of carbon dioxide emissions, but also hundreds of thousands of tons of particulate pollution that becomes soot and smog. Cutting these emissions will help prevent thousands of premature deaths, heart attacks, asthma attacks, and missed work days. Minority and low-income communities, which are more likely to be located in areas burdened with pollution, will particularly benefit from these emission reductions.
