My Time as a Remote Intern at EESI
EESI Development Intern Grace Linhares Discusses an Unusual Situation
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many unforeseen and unprecedented changes. A looming question for me this spring was: will I have an internship this summer? As state after state began closing businesses and invoking stay-at-home orders, more and more emails trickled into my inbox, informing me that the position I had applied to had been cancelled, I began to lose hope. Receiving the word that I had been selected as the summer development intern for EESI lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.

From the Executive Director Daniel Bresette September is typically the month for buckling down and getting back to work after a summer of fun in the sun. Students finding their routine. And Congress returning to Washington to wrap up its business for the year. But very little about 2020 is normal. The coronavirus pandemic has taken an awful toll. Many students will be online for now. And it is even harder than usual for Congress to keep up, which makes EESI's educational resources, research, and collaboration with them especially valuable. You are probably wondering what comes next. We must not let 2020 become the “new normal.” But we also have to be careful not to wax nostalgic for the “old normal” either. The future must be a “better normal”—more sustainable, resilient, and equitable—if we hope to make urgent progress in the fight against climate change. With your help, EESI has devoted September to highlighting the clean energy workforce needed to realize a “better normal.” You helped make our current Workforce Wednesdays online briefings possible, which feature speakers involved in training workers at every career stage. We are doing our part, too, by hosting four future climate leaders in remote internships over the summer, as well as another four this fall. Thanks for your commitment to advancing climate change solutions.
