Highlights:
In the Senate, the ADVANCE Act of 2023 (S.111) was reported favorably out of the Committee on Environment and Public Works. The bill, which has bipartisan support, would develop, deploy, and preserve nuclear energy technology, as well as empower the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to lead in the development of international advanced nuclear reactor regulations. EESI’s recent briefing, The State of Play for Nuclear Energy in the U.S., provided an in-depth look at the Department of Energy’s nuclear energy programs.
Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-N.Mex.) introduced two transmission bills: S.1793, which would create a tax credit for the installation of transmission lines considered “regionally significant,” and S.1804, which would work to expedite the permitting and review process for transmission lines.
Finally, in the House, Rep. Matthew Rosendale Sr (R-Mont.) and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Penn.) introduced the House version of the Industrial Hemp Act (H.R.3755/S.980), a bill that would create a separate classification for industrial hemp, as opposed to cannabinoid hemp, removing restrictions for hemp growers. EESI’s article on industrial hemp in the Farm Bill discusses some of the ways changes to hemp legislation can help grow the industry.
