From January 31 to February 4, the House passed a science-related bill and legislation was introduced in the Senate on disaster resilience.

The House passed the Bioeconomy Research and Development Act of 2021 (H.R.4521). The bill would establish a federal program to advance engineering biology research. The bill’s sponsor Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Tex.) stated “engineering biology research will help us grow sustainable food that is more resilient to climate change, reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and make more effective drugs to treat human disease…”

Additionally, Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) introduced disaster-related bills. The Achieving Equity in Disaster Response, Recovery, and Resilience Act of 2022 (S.3502) aims to improve disaster assistance for underserved communities. The Disaster Resiliency Planning Act (S.3510) would help federal agencies incorporate disaster resilience into asset management and investment decisions.
