From January 18 to 21, Congress held hearings on the energy impacts of cryptocurrency and fossil fuel leasing in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, legislation was introduced to create a national climate adaptation and resilience plan.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on the energy impacts of cryptocurrency. Committee Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) stated that the hearing was not intended to “discourage innovation, but instead to examine the potential environmental costs of the cryptomining industry and what can be done to address those impacts.”

On the topic of fossil fuel development, the House Committee on Natural Resources held a hearing on how oil and gas leasing in the Gulf of Mexico could impact U.S. climate targets.

In addition, Senator Christopher Coons (D-Del.) and Representative Scott Peters (D-Calif.) introduced bills (S.3531 and H.R.6461) which would require the federal government to produce a national climate adaptation and resilience strategy.
