With the energy provisions in the 2008 Farm Bill, Congress took an important step toward tapping the significant renewable energy resources in rural America. However, much more needs to be done if the U.S. is to effectively address the urgent twin challenges of climate change and creating thousands of well-paying jobs across rural America advancing the renewable energy economy of the future. This was the message Carol Werner, Executive Director of EESI, delivered to the "2009 Energy Outlook Conference" of the National Association of State Energy Officials on Wednesday, February 4. Significant opportunities lie ahead in the 111th Congress and with the new administration for state and federal governments to work together and fully implement and expand upon these policies.
