The U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Energy (DOE) have in recent weeks announced the availability of funds for biomass-related research, development, and deployment programs – the Biomass Crop Assistance Program, the Biomass Research and Development, and research and development of drop-in bio-oils.

On April 6, the DOE announced that it would begin receiving letters of intent and applications for research projects on the stabilization and commoditization of bio-oils. Up to $15 million will be made available for research in this area. Projects must relate to the development of biomass-based oils which can be blended and refined with petroleum to produce renewable, drop-in transportation fuels such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuels. "Drop-in" fuels do not require any modifications to engines or fuel distribution systems. The letter of intent is due May 1, and the application is due May 29.

On March 22, the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) announced an application period for the Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) Project Areas. Funding will be made available on a competitive basis for the establishment of eligible biomass crops on eligible land to supply an associated, eligible biomass energy conversion facility within a project area. The Request for Proposal and additional information can be found here . Proposals will be accepted until April 23. Information about submitting a proposal can be found on the www.grants.gov website.

Also on March 22, the USDA and DOE announced an application period for funding "to support research and development in advanced biofuels, bioenergy and high-value biobased products." The projects will be funded through the Biomass Research and Development Initiative (BRDI) - a joint program through the USDA and DOE. Applicants must propose projects that integrate science and engineering research in the areas of biomass feedstock development, biofuels and biobased products development, or biofuels development analysis. Applications are due April 23.
