Equitable Beneficial Electrification for Rural Electric Co-ops
The Cooperative Leadership Network (CLN) hosted a 90-minute webinar on Monday, May 20, that explored equitable beneficial electrification for rural electric cooperatives. Beneficial electrification refers to the replacement of fossil-fuel powered systems with electrical ones in a way that reduces overall emissions, while providing benefits to the environment and to households. An example would be switching from propane heating to electric heating, or from a gasoline-powered car to an electric vehicle. Featured panelists included EESI Program Associate Miguel Yanez, who presented the report, Equitable Beneficial Electrification for Rural Electric Cooperatives, for which he was the lead author.

Program Associate Miguel Yanez gave a presentation on EESI's On-Bill Financing Project at the 2017 American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) Energy Efficiency Finance Forum, held May 21- 23 in Chicago. She discussed high-performance buildings powered by a renewable energy, with a special focus on policy, codes, and incentives (which were the conference's key themes).
Toward A Sustainable Transportation Network in the Northeast Corridor
On April 28, EESI's Transportation and Energy Policy Fellow, Paul Haven, gave a presentation to the Maryland American Planning Association in Annapolis, Maryland. His presentation, Toward A Sustainable Transportation Network in the Northeast Corridor, covered the reasons why a national high-speed passenger rail network would not only make our national transportation network more sustainable, but would also improve the nation's economic competitiveness for decades to come. Paul also highlighted that the Federal Railroad Administration's evaluation of rail investment alternatives for the Northeast Corridor, known as NEC FUTURE, needs to consider the cost and impact of expanding road and air networks, as such an expansion would be required in scenarios involving lower levels of rail investment.
